As we enter into the Summer season and break out of the winter doldrums and the COVID Lockdown, this is a good time to move your palate out of its comfort zone. When most people think of Craft Beer, they think of bitter IPAs and thick Stouts. But there is so much more than that.
From The Green Growler in Denison – here are a handful of things to know about Craft Beer:
1. Think of Bread and Beer and you’ll appreciate the varieties.
When we think of the standard American Light Lager, we think of sandwich bread. There are some popular national brands and some locals, but there is not a huge difference between them. Some like the whipped tiny holes in Sunbeam and some like a firmer crust on Wonder Bread. And fans know the difference between Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, and Michelob Ultra. To really enjoy these they need to be very cold so that they remain crisp and refreshing. These are deliciously simple beverages which is why they are so popular.
But there are so many other types and varieties of beers just like there are so many different styles of bread. Let’s talk about English Muffins, Bagels, French Baguettes, Sweet Danish, Italian Biscotties, and there are so many more.
2. Beer Styles are just guidelines.
If you ask a coworker to pick you up a cheeseburger for lunch, you could end up with anything from a $2 fast food meal to a $10 gourmet lunch from a local mom-and-pop store that strives to a full and delicious meal.
How do you know the difference? Well, you just have to try them.
At The Green Growler, we’ll give you a sip of anything on tap. You can also venture out and get a flight of beers which are about a 4-5 ounce pour and you’d normally get 4 or six of these. It’s a great way to try a few beers without having to have a full pint of each.
3. There are only two kinds of beer.
We can get very technical on the beer ingredients and how it is brewed, but in the end, it all comes down to what you learn to like.
What are the two kinds of beer? Those you like and those you don’t.
But we’re betting that there are quite a few you’d like if you had the opportunity to try them. And that’s why we’re here. We not only like beer ourselves, but we love sharing it with you.
4. Bring it home and drink it fresh.
Over a third of the beers that we have on tap are from local (within 100 miles) breweries that either do not can their beers and do not use a third party distributor to deliver their beers. We have to go to the brewery to get the beers ourselves.
We have Growler in our name because, as much as we love your company, we really want you to enjoy these beers and ciders at home or when you are out on the lake or at a park. Filling a growler gives you the tap beer in a convenient to-go container that can be reused (so it’s Green!). And we’ll fill anyone’s growler, but we’ll give you 10% off when refilling one of ours.
5. We have Wine and Ciders too!

Besides the craft beers (on tap and in cans), we also carry ciders on tap and in cans. We also have over 50 wines and most of these are available by the glass. How do we keep the wine from spoiling? Come on in and we’ll show you the cool technology we have that preserves the freshness.

At The Green Growler, we want to share our love for these fabulous adult beverages with adventurous people with curious palates.

Our hope is that you’ll love it as much as we do.

Dan McCabe
