Local Scouting Group Hosts Annual BBQ Fundraiser

VAN ALSTYNE, TEXAS,Nov. 25, 2013 TheFriends of Scouting in Van Alstyne – home of the 100-year-old Boy Scout Troop 44 -- will host their annual barbecue fundraiser on Saturday evening, Dec. 14, 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church Sanford Center, 301 S. Preston St. in Van Alstyne. The public is invited.

This is one of the largest fundraisers for the group, and between the barbecue and the annual car show, goes to pay all of the necessary expenses, insurance, utilities, etc., for the Scout Hut and Van Alstyne scouting complex. This includes a Scouting history museum for the entire region, and the public is always welcome to explore this museum during Scout meetings on Tuesday evenings or at pre-arranged times.

The Friends of Scouting in Van Alstyne supports all of the local Scout groups, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts – along with a few Venture Scouts. All of these groups share together in the use and upkeep of the building and facilities, and will be doing their part to make this a successful event.

The menu this year includes barbecue brisket, sausage and boneless chicken breast with sides of green beans, cole slaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and rolls. And of course, the meal wouldn’t be complete without campfire cobbler and ice cream for dessert, with coffee, hot chocolate and iced tea to drink. The meals are all you can eat, at $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any scout, or at the door. “To Go” orders will also be accepted, as scouters, of all people, know how busy life can be. Orders can be placed in advance by emailing Troop44VA@yahoo.com.

The event will also include a silent auction of themed baskets which the scouts are preparing now based on donations from area merchants, largely centered around outdoor activities. Last year’s offerings included camp stoves, cast iron cookware, sleeping bags, tents, pocket knives, flashlights, etc. – good quality items for some great prices, assuming you don’t get outbid! As always, for more information about scouting events and activities, please contact Scoutmaster Brian Hendricks at (903) 487-9911.
