Durant High School Hosts Bedlam Blood Drive October 9
September 25, 2013─ To show their community and school spirit, blood donors can give with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI). Durant High School is sponsoring a blood drive, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the new practice gym.
Oklahoma Blood Institute exclusively provides every drop of blood needed by patients in Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma. Some 144 other medical facilities across the state also rely on OBI donors to provide life-saving blood for their patients.
Each blood donor, 16 years or older*, will receive the choice of a free University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University donor T-shirt and be entered to win a pair of tickets to the 2013 Bedlam football game in Stillwater.**
“Someone needs blood every two seconds, and since blood can only be used for 42 days, we constantly need people to donate,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute. “This ongoing need is why we are asking Durant- area residents to come to this blood drive and give.”
The supply of blood must constantly be renewed because there is no substitute for blood. Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to AABB, those with O-negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population. However, O-negative blood can be used in any emergency situation when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.
Through a special initiative to support the Global Blood Fund (GBF), any donor can forgo the T-shirt. In turn, funds so designated will be contributed to GBF, a nonprofit that provides blood center technology and supplies to struggling blood centers around the world so they can meet local needs through voluntary blood donation.
Donations can be made every 56 days and typically take about an hour. Appointments are not required but can be made at obi.org or by calling 877-340-8777.
